Act 1

The Outlander Who Caught the Wind

Welcome to Teyvat, a world of seven nations and seven elements.

Despite being marketed as an open-world game, Genshin Impact is notoriously easy to get spoiled in. As such, it is recommended that you be mindful of where you explore, and try not to get too far ahead in the guide to avoid any type of spoilers.

Wanderer's Trail

This is the starting sequence of the game.

  • The protagonist will be referred to as “The Traveler”
  • Both siblings are equally canon as the Traveler
  • Official marketing typically shows the male Traveler for consistency purposes
  • For an immersive story experience it’s highly recommended to pick a name that sounds like a name.
  • This is the name the characters will use when referring to you throughout the game.
  • If you don’t have inspiration, here’s some suggestions:
  • Yíng
  • Hotaru
  • Lucciola
  • Lonrú
  • Traveler
  • Kōng
  • Sora
  • Cielo
  • Spéir
  • Traveler

  • These are NOT the strongest/most useful characters available, rather these are characters we recommend for the new player experience.
  • These characters were designed together with the content you’re playing. They are of an appropriate strength and the materials to upgrade them should be available to you now or soon.
  • You can play with whichever characters you want, but be advised that newer characters may require materials from much later in the game.
  • Stronger and newer optimized teams can trivialize content and even skip dialogue during combat.
  • If you want an immersive story experience it’s highly recommended to keep the Traveler on your team during quests.
  • Even if you don’t, it’s recommended to upgrade the Traveler because sometimes the story will force you to use them.

Traveler's Journey I

Prologue: Act I

The Outlander Who Caught the Wind

  • Genshin’s story is presented in a quest format
  • Archon Quests are considered to be the main story of the game
  • There are many NPCs throughout Teyvat, you can learn a lot from talking to them!
  • The worldbuilding in this game is most effective if you come to learn about the lives of normal people in Teyvat
  • Some NPCs give quests or small rewards when you talk to them
  • View the Exploration tab above to see what areas you may explore freely.
  • View the Minor World Quests tab to see the list of World Quest currently available for you to do either during or after this Archon Quest.

Exploration I

New Areas

  • Galesong Hill
  • Windwail Highland

Places to Avoid

  • Windrest Peak (North-west)

Genshin Impact is an open world RPG, but frequently you’ll find yourself pulled into random quests against your will. For the best experience, it is recommended to unlock more of the map at a very slow pace, generally matching that of the current progression in the story. Sometimes, explorable areas are locked behind Quests.

As the game updates, so does the world map, which unfortunately does not always take into consideration the new player experience. These areas assume the player has gone through more of the story, resulting in spoilers or strange occurences. Early-game areas may border newer areas which new players should avoid.

We will provide a series of maps to help you navigate the game.

  • Cross green borders to enter new areas you may explore. The statues displayed in the guide’s maps will reveal the areas you are now free to explore.
  • DO NOT cross red borders as they represent parts of the map that should be completely avoiding
  • Some quests may take you into unexplored territory, if it’s not in red areas, you are free to follow them.

Traveler

“Don’t lose faith in that which you have lost. In this new world, you will never be alone. Where you leave your footprints, and where you have yet to stride — your new world will unfold before you.”
“Welcome to a new world.”

“The world you once knew is but dust, and the wonders you knew but rubble. Though you should have your own world, and your own people — lamenting what is already lost…”
-K·K

  • Each character’s profile features a whole set of stories that provide extra background information
  • Typically, unlocking these requires leveling up character friendship through daily interactions
    • It is unrealistic to assume players own all characters at maximum friendship, so all character stories will be provided in this guide at the appropriate reading time
  • The Traveler’s stories are different, in that they unlock as you progress through the game’s story
    • This guide will give access to the Traveler’s stories whenever a new one unlocks
  • “Drip Marketing” is a fan-coined gacha term referring to official news about upcoming characters.
  • Drip Marketing teases upcoming characters by revealing their name, design, element, and a short description that often includes a quote by some in-game character
  • This image on the right, shows Drip Marketing for the Traveler, and the text above shows the associated quote for the two of them

  • Story Quests typically give more depth on the specific characters that they focus on
  • They take place in between parts of the main story, further building up the world

A Special Warning

About Pre-unlocked waypoints

Various waypoints will automatically unlock in unexplored areas after the completion of this quest. The purpose of this is to allow new players to ‘skip’ forward. You can visit later regions of the game early to gather materials to upgrade newer characters and explore newer content.

If you want an immersive guided experience we suggest you do NOT do this, as some waypoints could also trigger some unwanted quests.

Where to Explore

You must progress through Act III to access the Statue of the Seven

  • New area:
    • Brightcrown Mountains
  • Warnings:
    • Do not enter the northernmost area (Windrest Peak) until Season 6, Act 3

Warning

Boxes with important information will be in yellow. Reading them when you complete the quest listed just before will help to improve your story experience

  • Completing Prologue: Act III will unlock a few teleport waypoints to faraway locations
  • It is recommended to not use these free waypoints until it is time to visit that area
  • Teleporting to areas early has a high chance of activating quests out of order
  • It is pretty easy to accidentally trigger quests while stumbling around if you aren’t careful
  • A good tip is to place a pin on the map if this guide indicates that you should avoid a quest, and that quest doesn’t have a permanent map marker (like an Archon Quest)

Witch's Homework: Solution

This quest triggers upon entering the Knights of Favonius Headquarters. Read the details before deciding what to do next

  • This brown background indicates that this quest takes place at a later time than where it is placed in the guide
  • The reason that quests are moved early is typically because they are annoying or impossible to avoid
  • It is recommended to always read the extra information provided on these quests
  • A new event and quest called “Witch’s Homework” will appear in your menus upon completing Prologue: Act III
  • This quest does not take place until Season 6, Act 3
  • THIS QUEST IS UNAVOIDABLE, and will trigger the next time you enter the Knights of Favonius Headquarters
  • You can choose to either click through the quest quickly or play it normally for a sneak peek at some future events
  • This guide will provide a video link for this quest when you reach the correct time to play it

Story Teaser: We Will Be Reunited

  • Red blocks serve as an indication of major out-of-game content
  • They are very important for understanding certain aspects of the game, and should not be ignored
  • This video serves as a sneak peek for the future, and builds dramatic irony that isn’t yet present in-game
  • Now is a good time to watch it, but you can also save it for after completing Chapter 5
    • There will not be another entry for this video at that point
  • IMPORTANT: There is only one version of this video
    • If you chose Aether, the male Traveler, as your MC, watch the video as is
    • If you chose Lumine, the female Traveler, as your MC, then while watching the video you will need to swap the roles of the two in your interpretation of the events

Genshin Impact Manga

  • As we saw before, the manga explores another story in Mondstadt
    • Prologue – ancient history of Mondstadt
    • Chapters 1-16 – modern-day Mondstadt, not long before the in-game events
  • The localization of the manga is frequently different than in-game
  • The manga was only officially translated up to Chapter 13, so fan translations have been provided for the last three chapters

  • Interlude: Act I
    • Triggers when approaching Yujing Terrace (where the Rite of Descension occurred)

    • AVOID YUJING TERRACE FOR NOW
  • Chapter I: Act IV Prelude
    • Triggers when talking to Katheryne in Mondstadt
    • ONLY CLAIM COMMISSIONS IN LIYUE UNTIL YOU START THIS QUEST
    • This quest is marked as a World Quest, but the game treats it as an Archon Quest
  • From now on, newly released Archon Quests will appear in your Events menu
  • These quests typically come with an option to “Quick Start” them, DO NOT EVER QUICK START A QUEST
  • Quick starting skips quest progression, and there also exists a decent chance for quest conflicts to arise due to quick starts
  • Around this time, you will likely be reaching Adventure Rank 30
  • From here on out, STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE MONDSTADT CRAFTING BENCH
  • Approaching it will trigger a World Quest that takes place later, which will be mentioned in Act 4
  • If you accidentally start it, STOP PLAYING ONCE IT GIVES YOU CONTROL AGAIN

The Many Matters Learned in One's Travels

This quest triggers upon selecting a dialogue option. Read the details before interacting with Katheryne

  • After completing Chapter I: Act III, Katheryne will have a new dialogue option
  • CLICKING “Any News?” WILL AUTOMATICALLY START THIS QUEST
  • This quest unlocks an anecdote system, and does not take place until Season 5, Act 3
  • The anecdotes usually auto-trigger on approach, and can potentially result in spoilers via dialogue or meeting characters too early
  • Activating this system will also cause a quest conflict in an Archon Quest during Season 2, Act 1
  • You can simply never click this dialogue option until Season 5, Act 3 if you do not want to have these anecdotes pop up yet
  • Complete Chapter I: Act III
