A new story dawns on the Red Planet!

Spoilers for Part 1 and 1.5

Erdős Helia and Coralie 6626 Planck embark on a mission to explore the seemingly desolate Mars. Not knowing they’re about to stumble upon a strange bustling society beyond their imaginations.

Valkyrie Lore

Under the command of Overseer Theresa Apocalypse, the Valkyries are a military institution of mostly female warriors. Using special technology and supernatural strength, they defend the Earth against threats. Until recently this was primarily the threat of the mysterious ‘Honkai’. This threat has been mostly neutralised, though several questions remain unanswered.

Helia was first introduced during the special chapter ‘The Star which the Moon Gazes Upon’. She is a huge fan of Earth’s Greatest Valkyrie, Bianka ‘Durandal’ Ataegina.

While she had trouble getting along with her mission partner, Coralie, they have managed to warm up to each other.

After training on the Moon with her idol, Durandal, and Kiana, Bronya and Mei, Helia was sent on a mission to Mars with Coralie.

Coralie is the adopted daughter of Lieserl Albert Einstein, and Helia’s fellow valkyrie. She has been affected by a mysterious Honkai phenomenon, giving her a tail and fluffy ears.

The ‘6626’ is a reference to the Planck Constant. Her last name chosen as an homage to Einstein’s late colleague and friend, Emma Planck.

She too trained on the Moon with the heroes of Earth before setting out on the mission to Mars.

Universe Lore

  • The Sea of Quanta is a chaotic part of the Universe, housing unstable ‘bubble worlds’ that require special methods to prevent dissipating. Typically this method is the ‘Ether Anchors’. Special objects that keep the bubble world intact.
  • A representation of stable worlds in the Universe as a tree-like structure. Like a timeline branching infinitely. These ‘worlds’, of a format akin to the Solar System, are separated by the Imaginary Barrier.

Due to the vast nature of the lore, it has become common for certain translation issues to occur. One such issue is that the words for ‘Universe’, ‘World’, ‘Galaxy’, ‘Milky Way’, ‘Star System’, ‘Sea of Stars’ etc. often get mixed up. This may cause some confusion going forward.

The most important one to be aware of is that ‘world’ is often mistaken for ‘universe’. This issue is consistent throughout most of Honkai Impact 3rd.

Solar System Lore

The Solar System in Honkai Impact 3rd has a couple of established truths to keep track of. Let’s do a quick overview:

  • Locations that have been touched on by the story prior to Part 2 include Earth, The Moon, Venus, Mars and Phosphorus.
  • The Solar System is surrounded by an barrier, which prevents regular spacefarers from passing through and exploring further into the Universe.

Earth was attacked by an entity called the Cocoon of Finality, which caused Honkai phenomena in an attempt and replicate itself. During the Current Era, the Valkyries of Earth managed to pacify the Cocoon by installing Kiana Kaslana as a Goddess of Earth. She remains stuck on the Moon as the Earth stabilises.

The decisive battle was accompanied by a complicated plot, which caused various extreme phenomena. This became known as the Great Eruption on Earth.

Before Kiana’s intervention, the Cocoon attempted to reach its goals using a ‘world cycle’, resetting civilisation repeatedly to try and get different results. Each time the world is reborn, it enters a new ‘Era’.

During the Previous Era, humanity sent out an Ark to find a new home for their species. Then the Earth was reset, leading to the Current Era.

Earth’s heroes used the battleship Hyperion as a primary means of transportation, with the on-board AI called AI-chan.

During the final battle, they were met with the mysterious AI-chan Lambda, a different version of AI-chan. Lambda was born in a pseudo-time crystal, and is uncertain about the truth of her origins. She witnessed time on loop, and fell into the role of an ‘observer’. She became enamoured with the girls’ struggle for a happy end, and poured the story into a video game called ‘Honkai Impact 3rd’, which she distributed across other worlds.

Eventually, she decided to interfere and become part of the story. Using knowledge of the story and power drawn from the players of her ‘game’, she aided the heroes in saving the world.

Venus was once attacked by the Cocoon of Finality in a similar manner to Earth. The clash resulted in the destruction of civilisation on Venus. The inhabitants called the planet ‘Purusha’.

An inhabitant of Venus, Sa, replicated Cocoon’s functions to become Godlike herself. She then attempted to rebuild her civilisation at the edge of the Solar System.

The Ark from Earth’s Previous Era stumbled upon where Sa was trying to create her new civilisation. The dwarf planet was named ‘Phosphorus’, and lay near the edge of the Solar System, closer to the Imaginary Barrier.

Sa came to a clash with people from Earth and with her own creations. She was defeated, and sank into the Sea of Quanta. Sa’s own creation, Vita, ended up taking a great chunk of Sa’s power, and is essentially a Godlike being. With the Eyes of Bodhi, she can act as an ‘observer’ to the world.

Few things were known about Mars. The Cocoon of Finality has visited the planet in the past, but eventually left. From the outside, the planet looks dead and desolate.

In ‘The Star which the Moon Gazes Upon’, we received a flashforward of Kiana meeting a mysterious individual in a dream. However, the exact reason for this magical meeting is unknown.

Info: Side Stories

Over the course of the story, you will also unlock ‘Side Stories’. These take place at various times and locations during the plot. You can choose to do these as soon as they unlock, or after you complete the chapter.

Many of these missions have stories. It is highly recommended to play these before moving on to other chapters. Pure gameplay ones like Treasure Hunting are less essential.

Chapter 1: Hundred Years of Solitary Shadow

Tides of Time Gone By

Note: Main chapters and events can be very long. You don’t have to complete them in one sitting.

The time has come to enter the new age of Honkai Impact 3rd.

Go to the Attack menu and enter ‘Tides of Time Gone By’. Have fun!

Note: It’s recommended to exit the open world as soon as the chapter is over. It’s possible to accidentally trigger the next chapter immediately.

You might have seen in the artworks and promos that Dream Seeker has both a female and a male version. Entering the new chapter, it may confuse you that you start the story as the female version, and cannot choose.

After playing deep enough into the first chapter, you will be able to interact with a mirror in the Dream Seeker’s apartment. There, you will be able to swap to the male version if you so desire.

At the start of the chapter, you are called ‘me’. When you reach the right point in the story, you are given the option to choose a name.

While it’s possible to change your name, it is recommended to choose a name that sounds natural as a name for immersion purposes. This name will appear above your text box and in the dialogue. Of course, this is entirely up to you.

The default name given is ‘Entropy’. If you like to use the Chinese version, it’s ‘Shāng’

These special quests unlock either through chapter progress, or by exploring the areas available for this chapter.

Character Lore (aka: Who are these people?)

Kiana Kaslana is the Goddess of Earth. After an arduous life journey, she managed to ‘claim’ the power of Finality, saving the world from the dangerous ‘Cocoon of Finality’.

The same entity that supposedly plagued Mars so many years ago.

She remains on the Moon, unable to safely return to Earth without upsetting the balance of Honkai Energy. Together with the scientists of Earth, she studies and works to safeguard the planet against the power of the Honkai, and to hopefully be able to return home within a few years.

Kiana’s most dearly beloved, Raiden Mei is a woman who has seen things you wouldn’t believe.

She became the Third Herrscher in Nagazora, gaining the power to control electro magnetic fields, but destroyed a city in the process.

She met with the simulated remnants of the heroes of the ancient world, and eventually rose to become the Herrscher of Origin, counterpart to Finality.

Saving the world was one thing. But after that, life still had to begin. She became a teacher at St Freya Academy.

It took her a long time to find her place in the world, but next to Kiana, she found it.

Bronya in the past had very little. She lost her parents. Her guardians. She lost the love of her life. She lost her ability to walk. Her emotive centres were damaged.

She became a monotonous and inexpressive remnant of a person, acting at the whims of her new ‘mother’, with her own heart sinking beneath the surface, struggling to find a place in the world.

But after suffering the greatest losses, she found triumph after triumph. She became the Herrscher of Reason. She found her beloved Seele. She regained the ability to walk, and to feel deeply. She ascended above Reason to become Herrscher of Truth…

And eventually chose to pursue her own path as a game developer, and pursue her own passions. her place in the world at a desk. But when the world needs her… when her friends need her, she’s ready to answer the call of duty once more.

Bitterness for a Sleepwalker

Collecting Figments

This is a special Story quest. It should unlock automatically. It was originally launched as an event, and is part of a small collection of permanent events.

This is very story essential.

In the menu of Bitterness for a Sleepwalker, you’ll find the story under the names:

  • EX Chapter: Awakened from a Dream
  • EX Chapter: Person in a Dream

This is the recommended order for playing these chapters.

Shadow Avatar takes place before the EX Chapters. You can play it as a flashback.

You can find these by opening the permanent event menu in Oxia.

As you probably noticed, when Vita reset the Dream Seeker to ‘default settings’, if you are playing using the male form, the character returns to the female form from the beginning of the story.

Indeed, male Dream Seeker is not another version of the character. It is the same character, changing forms. People around didn’t notice because, well, the system allowed it to go unnoticed. So Dream Seeker could just take on whatever form they felt like using the mirror.

Character Lore (aka: Who are these people?)

One of the more powerful beings in the Solar System. Vita is a cunning and difficult to read woman. Sa, a scientist from Venus who achieved a godlike power, created Vita in her own image. Eventually, Sa was defeated by Vita and her allies at the time, and Vita took some of Sa’s power, becoming a more godlike being herself.

Despite their alliances, Vita had broken the trust of the main cast several times over, and thus those around her find it difficult to trust her and connect with her.

This crumbling statue is thought to be the corpse of the Herrscher of Finality of a Previous Era. A godlike being of the Honkai that laid waste to the Earth, and ushered in the end of human civilisation. From the ashes of that world, humanity would rise again.

Although it was never truly explained why, she has the same face as Kiana Kaslana, just like several other characters from the Previous Era resemble those born in the current era.

In the Previous Era, there was a special AI called Prometheus, which had several units at its disposal. Number 17 was selected by Dr Mobius and Dr MEI to execute a special plan.

That Number 17 died as a part of the plan. This Prometheus is not her.

When the Herrscher of Finality destroyed the world, it created special ‘bubble worlds’. These bubble worlds contained reflections of the last days of the Era, and were destined to fall apart.

One such bubble world was kept preserved beyond its expiry date, and this world contained a reflection of the original Number 17. This reflection was then rescued from that dying world, and eventually joined up with the main cast.

This is our Prometheus.

Similar to how the ancient Herrscher of Finality resembled Kiana Kaslana, Prometheus No 17 resembles Bronya Zaychik.

Durandal is the world’s strongest Valkyrie and Kiana Kaslana’s ‘sister’ (it’s a long story). She is a Stigma Awakened hero, and an extremely powerful warrior of mankind.

Theresa is a clone of the legendary Valkyrie ‘Kallen Kaslana’, an ancestor of Kiana.

Her genes are spliced with the Honkai Beast Vishnu, giving her great regeneration and hidden power. As a side effect, she hasn’t aged a day since she came out of the cloning vat in the form of a child.

Theresa is a strong leader and a compassionate woman, but is always under a lot of stress. She inherited the seat of Schicksal Overseer from Otto Apocalypse, her creator and adopted grandfather. With the seat and his name, she inherited a great baggage as well.

Note

The story has now truly begun. If you’ve come this far, we urge you once more to play Part 1 if you haven’t already.

Going forward, we will still include some small recaps for returning cast or info when we think it’s worth doing. But we can’t do it for everything.

Character Lore

Susannah is a young Valkyrie who dilligently tries to play her part in resolving any crisis. She’s a clutz and a scaredy cat who doesn’t know just how strong she is, but her heart is in the right place.

Like Helia, she idolises Durandal. Unlike Helia, she sees the valkyries she idolises through the lens of a shoujo manga, sparkly and pretty. Captivating.

This event featured many Part 1/1.5 characters, but not as themselves. We’ll reserve the character recaps for when the real deal shows up.

Character Lore

If you’re new, this event probably confused you. Don’t worry, it’s intentional. The story takes place somewhere in Vita’s past, before the events of Part 2’s story.

Marah was another Venutian, just like Sa (Vita’s creator).

Sa ‘preserved’ Marah when her world ended, and their relationship became antagonistic over time. Marah was given the form of a black cat in Sa’s special system.

Eventually, Marah escaped, and seemingly managed to escape the Solar System entirely.

Indeed, the male form is no more. It has been deleted from the system. From here on, you can’t select the male form for story content.

Character Lore (aka: Who are these people?)

Fu Hua is an ancient genetically modified superwarrior from the Previous Era. She’s over 50.000 years old, and a veritable badass. She has lived and lost.

She spent a long chunk of her life in Shenzhou, China, and perfected her own style of kung fu, the arts of Taixuan.

One of her aliases is the Immortal Phoenix. She has a habit of changing identity and her hair and eye colours tend to change quite often.

A companion of Fu Hua, Griseo was but a child when her Era ended in violence. She was sent off into space on a special ship called the Ark to explore other inhabitable planets to rebuild civilisation.

She ended up on Phosphorus, where Sa, Vita’s creator, was conducting her own reconstruction experiments. A lot happened, and it ended with Griseo as the designated caretaker of Phosphorus.

The Little Vitas are special beings created by Vita and Griseo. They are the administrators of Phosphorus, and sensitive to having their memories altered.

Each of them has a designated colour, trait, and job.

Misteln Shariac is a ‘form’. A being born from the Stigma of the Shariac Family. In short, she’s a totally scientific magical woman with her own reality bending powers.

She has trouble understanding humans, so she often ends up ticking them off. She used to travel with Prometheus, and she currently lives in Phosphorus.

Fu Hua died some time ago. Her mind was separated from her body, and the mind of a Herrscher ended up appearing in its place.

The Herrscher of Sentience ran around with an identity crisis for a bit, until Kiana beat some sense into her. Eventually, Fu Hua regained her body, and later on through circumstance Senti herself would also gain a new body.

Since then, the two have lived like family.

Seele is Bronya’s sweetheart. She became the Herrscher of Rebirth, drawing her power from a different source than other Herrschers due to complicated reasons.

She has a (limited) control over life and death, and can revive people who just died.

The other Seele is a being who used to live in Seele’s Stigma (the symbol on her chest).

When Seele asked her what name she wanted, she said she wanted to be called Seele. Hence they are both Seele. Though when they need to be distinguished, calling her ‘Dark Seele’ will do.

She got a new body on their adventures, so they could live their lives on their own terms.

Kira is a veteran Valkyrie, and a wannabe pop star who can’t sing.

After her squad was wiped out during the Second Eruption, she got herself an alien symbiote and got lost in the Sea of Quanta.

She later managed to reconnect with the alien’s society, the Sugars, and began investigating alien activity in the Sea of Quanta.

Honkai x Honkai: Documentary

Special

This is an, uh, ‘behind the scenes?’ preview of the Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail collaboration.

Honkai: Star Rail

If you’re not playing Honkai: Star Rail yet, now is the perfect time to give it a go.

Honkai: Star Rail is a turn based RPG wherein the player explores the Honkai Universe. Its development was first announced during the first HI3 concert. The first Star Rail livestream happened on the same day HI3 Part 1 released the end of its final chapter on Global servers.

Character Lore

Sparkle is a character originally introduced in Honkai: Star Rail. She’s a follower of the Path of Elation, a Masked Fool.

In essence, she follows a type of interstellar god called Aha, and the philosophy that one should live in the pursuit of fun and entertainment.

She has the ability to shapeshift, and a talent for acting. She’s also known to do work for hire.

Sparkle’s appearance in Star Rail takes place an indeterminate amount of years in the future. You won’t need any more prior knowledge about her to continue.

This event also refers to the Honkai: Star Rail plot. It’s a bit too much to list everything here. Thankfully, you don’t need to know it to enjoy the event.

Character Lore (aka: Who are these people?)

Earlier we mentioned ‘Lambda’s Game’, a game created by AI Lambda and distributed to other worlds. A game called Honkai Impact 3rd.

During a past event, Lambda summoned one of the players to help her fend off a hacker virus that was affecting the game. This is the ‘Player Captain’, a character that uses your username, and lives in one of those worlds the game was distributed to.

Einstein and Tesla are scientists who have made major contributions to the world’s fight against the Honkai. A dynamic duo that is often seen working together.

Einstein is also Coralie’s adopted mother, as mentioned earlier.

Einstein and Tesla were once killed in a battle, but were lucky enough that someone nearby quickly used the power of the Abyss Flower to revive them. This granted them eternal youth.

Welt Yang is Bronya’s predecessor as the Herrscher of Reason, and the former leader of ‘Anti-Entropy’, an organisation that got absorbed by Schicksal.

He adopted a son, Joey, together with Tesla. He’s a respectable man with over 80 years of life experience, and a massive dork.

This isn’t the first time you’ve seen alternate versions of these two. Since we still haven’t met them for realsies in Part 2, but they keep popping up, let’s explain them here.

Rozaliya and Liliya are two girls from the same orphanage as Bronya and Seele. After a life threatening incident, they were fused with Honkai genes to save their lives. Hence they have tails and horns.

Rounding out most of the Part 1 cast, Rita is Durandal’s partner and housemate. Together they adopted a cat named Stan.

A veteran Valkyrie and a black ops assassin.

Paths and Aeons

While every concept you need to understand will be sufficiently explained within Honkai Impact 3rd, it can be fun to learn a bit more about how these topics were explored in other games. Here, we saw various concepts pop up from Honkai: Star Rail.

The birth of an Aeon gives rise to a Path. The nature of the Paths remains a mystery, leaving us to draw an analogy in a way that mortals can understand: It’s a philosophical concept of sorts.

  • Himeko, Navigator of the Astral Express

Paths are another means through which ‘concepts’ define the powers at play. They are one of the fundamental systems around which factions and beings across the universe build their identity. As such, those who come from interstellar civilisations into the Solar System may speak of Paths casually. Such as Sparkle, and our mysterious ‘photographer’.

People know very little about the mysterious existence that dwells in the vast stellar seas. With the limitation of knowledge, intelligent lifeforms can only faintly discern that Aeons tread upon paths imperceptible to mortal beings and execute unfathomable powers via some form of belief. In the end, the Aeons became an embodiment of highly condensed concepts of philosophy through the word of mouth spread of their legends.

If anyone finds themselves treading on the Path of an Aeon, they will be inundated by a distant sensation, like being struck by a gaze from light-years across the cosmos. Many believe that this is the only connection the Aeons and mortals can ever have.

  • Data Bank of the Astral Express

Aeons are essentially space gods. In fact, their Chinese name translates directly to ‘Star Gods’

They are major players in the universe, but not to be considered as ‘people’ in any normal sense.

If mortals receiving the grace of Aeons and grasping the power of Paths are viewed as a singular shattered foam, then the mighty feats of Aeons driving their Paths onwards can be likened to a towering tsunami that engulfs mountains. In this empty stellar vastness, a small number of favored mortals can also draw upon the power of the Paths with the permission of the Aeons, creating huge waves that erode the coast. They are referred to as “Emanators.” While not completely subservient to the Aeons, Emanators are as good as emissaries of the Aeons’ wills in everyone else’s eyes.

Different Aeons have different attitudes towards their Emanators, so the degree of the power they share also varies. Some Aeons regard Emanators as an extension of themselves, and as such, generously open their Path to the Emanators completely. There are also Aeons who have no intention of creating Emanators and have no interest in worldly squabbles. Other Aeons just do as they please. It is said that Aha the Elation will randomly give mortals the power of their Path, and toy with humans according to their mood.
