Honkai Impact 3rd

“Previously, in the Honkai Universe…”

Blue ‘Somewhere Else’ blocks are completely optional to peruse. This is regarding content from other games that may give you some extra context in the story. Please keep in mind that these blue blocks can have spoilers for those games, so if you wish to play them, you should not read the blue blocks.

Honkai Impact 3rd is another miHoYo game that started its story with a manga in 2015. Alongside Houkai Gakuen 2, it established the broader Honkai Universe.

Genshin Impact can be regarded as a soft spin-off, taking place within the same broader Universe. It shares themes and has different ‘versions’ of the same characters.

However, Genshin Impact was written with new players in mind, and no knowledge from Honkai Impact 3rd is needed to enjoy the game. Playing HI3 is completely optional, but it can enrich the Genshin experience.

The Honkai. A force that has plagued humanity for ages. When humanity grows, so does the Honkai. And eventually, cataclysm consumes the world. Against it stand the Valkyries, valiant warriors with special powers. Women of hope and strength.

Kiana Kaslana, Raiden Mei and Bronya Zaychik, three students of St Freya Academy, are about to undergo their Valkyrie exams. But unbeknownst to them, they’re about to be swept up in a saga that spans generations.

Video Languages

https://viewsync.net/ is a website that allows the user to display two youtube videos simultaneously while respecting Terms of Service and giving the owner of the video their proper stats.

miHoYo often only includes subtitles on the English voiced versions of their videos. For other voiced versions, we will be including Viewsync links that will allow you to watch with both subtitles and your desired voice over. Just turn off the sound of the English version of the video, and let it play! Unfortunately, fullscreen may not be available.

In cases where the video does not exist in the wanted language on any official channels, we will link to a reupload of the video if available.

Trailers

Trailers contain minor spoilers. They tease the future after all. Sometimes, we’ll link the trailer AFTER the content, because the spoilers are perhaps a bit too big.

Whether you watch the trailers is up to you. They can wet your appetite, but make for a less ‘blind’ experience. You can also come back and watch them after you’ve played trough the content.

Quests

Genshin Impact’s stories are primarily brought to you through the medium of Quests. It is absolutely stacked with them. You will encounter them around every corner. We can’t track all of the quests and give you an order to play them in.

Instead, this guide will provide you with guidelines for the major or generally lore relevant quests that will affect your story experience as a whole. Don’t be spooked if you unintentionally unlock a quest out of order. The game is open to be played in any order you wish. The story guide is merely an aide.

The game will do a lot to guide you through the quests naturally, but some oddities stick out. That’s where this guide will intervene.

We will give you some tips to avoid accidentally triggering quests.

Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind

Prologue

Act I of the game’s Prologue Chapter. It starts as soon as you finish the previous one.

Don’t forget to talk to NPCs you meet around you. You will pick up some smaller quests with various game tutorials and rewards.

Adventure Rank

‘AR’ is a method by which the player unlocks things. It goes up with just about any activity. This guide assumes the player follows a somewhat natural trajectory, meaning they don’t spend a lot of time leveling up AR without continuing the story.

If you do overlevel your AR, you may benefit from scrolling forward in the guide to check what you may ‘accidentally’ unlock in the process, causing you to enter quests out of order. This isn’t a huge problem if it happens. You can just consider it a ‘flashforward’.

At some point, your AR will reach a cap and you’ll need to complete a challenge to increase it. We will also include a recommendation for when to do this.

Project Genshin - Prologue

Manga

Project Genshin aka Genshin Impact (the manga) is a manga that was originally released back in 2018, 2 years before the game came out.

We put it after the first questline rather than before because Genshin’s quests are tailored to new players, and reading the manga after some quests seems like a better experience.

The official website version is missing chapter covers and several chapters, so we’re linking the Mangadex version instead.

Read the entire Prologue chapter, then return to this guide.

You can continue reading, but we recommend it later in the guide.

Familiar Faces

Venti is the first character to appear in the manga, and for players of miHoYo’s previous game, his appearance was striking. His name in Chinese is very close to Wendy, a character sharing several visual and thematic elements with Venti. Wendy was a girl in Honkai Impact 3rd, and the Herrscher of Wind.

Murata, the Lady of Fire. This name would be familiar to players of Honkai Impact 3rd and its predecessor Houkai Gakuen 2. Murata Himeko first appeared as a valkyrie fighting the Honkai. A redhead with a huge sword. She is often linked to themes of fire. Thus, the name ‘Murata’ appearing in the manga immediately got readers hyped for what Genshin Impact’s take on the character would be.

The Unknown Goddes, the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. She first appears during the intro of the game and takes away your sibling.

To Honkai players, she was immediately familiar as shehas visual similarities to the Herrscher of the Void version of Kiana Kaslana. She also shares her voice actress.

Kiana Kaslana is miHoYo’s recurring protagonist in several games.

Familiar Faces

Welt is a character who came into the story directly from Honkai Impact 3rd. He’s the successor of Welt Joyce as the Herrscher of Reason. Sovereign of Anti-Entropy, hero of humanity, anime enthusiast… Welt Yang has had a tumultuous history.

When his father Elias and his hero Welt died, Joachim Nokianvirtanen inherited the name ‘Welt’ from Joyce, and he started using his mother’s surname ‘Yang’.

Eventually, he adopted a son Joey, a clone of Joyce, and got married (allegedly to Frederica Nikola Tesla).

Yet even when he chose to settle down, the call of duty still came for him.

In the worlds of Honkai Impact 3rd and Houkai Gakuen, we find a rehead called Murata Himeko.

In Honkai Impact 3rd, she took up the duties of a Valkyrie after her father’s mysterious death, not knowing her college professor Welt Yang had been involved in his passing.

Eventually she would make the ultimate sacrifice for a student of her own. When Welt saw her face on a screen, he was confused. But it wasn’t her he saw. It was Star Rail’s Himeko.

A version of Kafka is also present in Honkai Impact 3rd. But she doesn’t have much of a story. She just ‘exists’

The ‘Silver Wolf of the Urals’ is the title Bronya Zaychik earned as an assassin. Both her Honkai Impact 3rd and Houkai Gakuen 2 versions have this honour.

However, personalitywise Star Rail’s Silver Wolf has more in common with the Captainverse’s ‘Bronie’, a rogue hacker who lost her identity as the daughter of Alexandra Zaychik.
